This maybe one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard and I came across this song while browsing the contents of my laptop. Well, the song is painful to listen especially if it reminds you of something- a person, a thing, or a situation you been through with. And you know that probably getting over with someone is a long process, “it may take some time to patch me up inside”, “I can’t take it so I ran away and hide” and all you can do was try to deal and carry on with it. Maybe the meaning of this song is getting over with someone, dealing with your loss but I think the most painful is the last part of the lyrics because it makes you see how all that you can do for yourself is to be in denial especially when that’s the best you ever had-“Well it’s not so bad”. I think the hardest part was the denial stage as mentioned in the lyrics “I don’t want you back”, telling yourself that you’re okay, trying to believe that you’re okay but honestly you are not. What probably remain in you were memories to deal with, and you know that things will never be the same again. Dealing with the other not wanting you, then not having a need for you. It hurts when the best you ever had has “sailed away”. The song actually reminds us of something or someone we had in our life once and they just can’t stay forever. When you let go of what you have, you become what you are. It may take some time though, but you'll get there. You will realize that the end of your relationship means the start of something new. In short, he's still the best you ever had.Īfter that relationship, you may experience feelings of denial, but there will come a time wherein you'll understand everything better. You compare everyone you meet with him but just realize in the end that it's still him that you're missing. Since that day that person left you, you never met someone like him. You have a special connection to this person more than anyone in this world. They take away your loneliness and feelings of emptiness. They fill in what you're lacking in your life. It hurts when the person is like your family. Someone who understands them more than the people around. There will come a time in the lives of every person wherein they'll meet a person., a special someone who changes the way they look at things and gives meaning to their lonely world. Really, the title is ironic: you're a god and I am not - well, that's actually not true anymore, because now you're not a god. This song means expresses the feelings of loss in a relationship. And that's why that song starts off, "I gotta be honest, we're covered in lies and that's okay." It's all okay, but I'm saying it's never gonna happen to me again. And it was the most amazing thing to just say, "No, I don't prescribe to your power over me anymore, and I'm gonna let you go." And it was gone. I had this really negative relationship that was a big source of angst and friction in my life. And I realized all I had to do was stop looking up at them, and start looking down on them. Whether it's a boss, or someone that you look up to. And it was a person who had power over me, seemed to be in a position that was above me, a place that was beyond my grasp. Once I had a relationship in my life that was largely negative. And there are others that are largely negative. Then there are some relationships that are largely positive. But there are some relationships that are nurturing, and there are some relationships where, by and large, we do the nurturing for the other person. On the one hand, some people may be more giving towards us and we're a little bit more taking from them, and the balance is constantly ebbing and flowing and changing over time. So, in every relationship that we have in our lives, there are certain dynamics that exist. It can be anything, whether it's a romantic thing or not - this one wasn't. Matt: Well, "You're A God" was written about when we give people in our lives power over us. This is what he said when asked what the meaning of the song "You're A God" was: Matt Scannell is the lead singer, lead guitarist, and main songwriter of Vertical Horizon.
